Thompson, Payne Release Statement on DHS’s First ‘Report on Homeland Security for Children’
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, and Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-NJ), released the below statement on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) releasing its first Report on Homeland Security for Children, which was mandated in the Homeland Security for Children Act (P.L. 117-130). This law, authored by Rep. Payne, Jr., ensures DHS is taking the needs of children into account when implementing its strategies, policies, and plans. A public report on its progress is due to Congress every five years.
"We applaud DHS's efforts on working with its components to help integrate the needs of children into its policies. We commend the progress that DHS has made including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and their efforts on identifying the impacts of ransomware in K-12 schools, and the new child-focused policies within Customs and Border Protection. We believe the report represents progress and look forward to working with the Department on future iterations. We have a moral obligation to protect our nation's most vulnerable during catastrophic events – and the Federal government should be leading this effort."
